The initial campaign was set up nationally in October 1995 and has been successfully running in Fareham since January 1999.

At present it is held 7 times a year at Ferneham Hall in Fareham to up to 850 capacity crowds.

The first event was financially supported by Fareham Borough Council’s Crime and Community Safety Panel who awarded £500 towards the start up costs and Ferneham Hall donated its venue free of charge as part of the Councils commitment to support activities for young people in the Borough. They were initially set up by local Police Officers to provide a safe environment for young people between the ages of 11 and 16, to have a good time away from the dangers of alcohol and drugs.

Young people from across the area regularly come along, attracted by the opportunity to meet with their friends, dance to the latest tunes, take part in competitions, games and support budding local stars who take to the stage.

SNAP is now an initiative of Fareham's Community Safety Partnership www.saferfareham.co.uk

The dance nights have included personal appearances by local bands and DJs, informally promoting drug, health and community information, whilst publicising SNAP (Say No and Phone) – 0800 555 111 the Crimestoppers Trust campaign to anonymously identify drug dealers. SNAP dance nights offer an alternative location to commercial venues that may also provide a facility for under 17 year olds. It is also a more acceptable event to parents who may have concerns about levels of supervision, organization and ultimately the environment that are allowing their children to enter.

The dance nights are staffed by uniformed Police Officers, official security staff and a team of loyal volunteers who give up their valuable Friday nights to make sure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience. Without the hard work of all those involved (including Fareham Borough Council, Hampshire Fire Service, Ferneham Hall, St John’s Ambulance, the trainee hairdressers at Fareham College and local parents), SNAP could not run.
